Beirut Activists Say Giving 3 Days to Government to Deal With Crisis

Lebanese activists demand the government to deal with the ongoing crisis in the country within 72 hours.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The demonstrators protesting against authorities’ inaction in Lebanon’s Beirut have given the government 72 hours to deal with the crisis in the country, an activist said Saturday.

The people are demanding that the government hold a parliamentary election, take steps to fight corruption and solve the issue with rubbish disposal.

"[A representative of activists] has read out the requirements for the country’s leadership. He called on all citizens to commence mass rallies across the country on Tuesday if our demands are not met," a protester told RIA Novosti, as the people have taken to the Beirut streets yet again on Saturday.

Last week, thousands of people took to the streets of Beirut. The demonstrators clashed with the police forces, protesting against the inability of the government to clean up the country of uncollected rubbish. The police attempted to disperse the activists with teargas, rubber bullets and water cannons.

According to local media reports, scores were injured in anti-governmental action.

Lebanon has been suffering from a political vacuum after then-President Michel Suleiman stepped down in 2014, and parliament repeatedly failed to agree on a candidate.
