MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Fire fighters managed to tackle the fire which broke out Wednesday afternoon on the site of a former mental hospital in the north east Berlin district of Wittenau a few meters away from two homes currently housing some 900 refugees, the DW news website reported.

The incident happened amid a growing number of anti-migrant attacks in Germany.

No one was injured in the blaze, according to the media.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin once the building sufficiently cooled down, the media said, citing a spokesperson for the local police.

Germany has been engulfed in a series of incidents in which suspected neo-Nazis have attempted to disrupt services to refugees in the country.

Overnight into Wednesday, local media reported a suspected arson attack in nearby town of Leipzig. Asylum seekers had been due to move into the converted accommodation later that day.

On Saturday and Sunday, far right-wing extremists clashed with police forces, protesting the opening of a refugee shelter in the eastern German town of Heidenau.

Europe is currently hit by a major migrant crisis, as thousands of migrants flee conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

Last week, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said that up to 800,000 asylum seekers and refugees are expected to arrive in the country by 2016, three times as many as last year.
