Belgium to Examine Luggage of Passengers Traveling by Int’l Trains

Belgium would make spot checks of luggage, belonging to the passengers of the international trains, since Sunday as a security measure after a shooting was conducted in a train connecting Amsterdam and Paris, Nathalie Pierard spokeswoman of the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB) said on Saturday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Pierard said that the luggage will be examined on the railway stations across the country, not only in the capital. Federal Police would conduct these checks in cooperation with the railway company security service.

France Train Gunman Denies Terror Links

On Friday, the gunman injured three passengers in a high-speed train traveling from Amsterdam to Paris while the Thalys train was at the station of Arras, 115 miles north of Paris. The shooter who boarded the train in Brussels said that he wanted to rob the passengers and that he found an abandoned bag with his weapon in one of the Brussels parks.

Later, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel called this shooting a terrorist attack and called for increase of the security measures on the Belgian railway stations. On Saturday, Belgium intensified the patrolling of international railway stations. and trains moving through the country.
