MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A member of the Danish People's Party has been convicted of racism on Tuesday for comparing Muslims to Adolf Hitler in a tweet, local media reported Tuesday.
Om jødernes situation i Europa: muslimerne fortsætter hvor Hitler sluttede. Kun den behandling, Hitler fik, vil ændre situationen
— Mogens Camre (@MCamre) 24 июля 2014
Mogens Camre wrote on Twitter that Muslims "are continuing [in Europe] where Hitler left off," and he suggested they get "the same treatment that Hitler received."
The Glostrup court fined the 79-yar-old former European Parliament lawmaker 8,000 Danish krones ($1,200).
According to The Local news portal, Camre filed an appeal against the court decision, arguing that the 140-symbol limit on Twitter was not enough for him to express the thought in a precise way.
Camre has previously been involved in scandals regarding his racist statements. In 2009, he told a Dutch television that the Muslim presence in Denmark was worse than the World War II Nazi occupation.
In 2005, the politician was reported to police for saying that the low birth rate in Denmark was due to an immigration burden. In 2003 he was accused of racism after he stated that Muslims had infiltrated to Western states for the purpose of taking over, according to The Local.
