MOSCOW (Sputnik) The national security strategy of Ukraine provokes conflict escalation in the southeast of the country, Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev said Tuesday.

"It is clear that this document serves as a basis for further implementation of militarization policies, does not take into the account the needs and aims of the country’s people, provides the United States and NATO with an opportunity to use Ukraine’s resource base and provokes further escalation in the southeast of the country," Patrushev told journalists.

A new Ukrainian National Security strategy was announced earlier this year. The document includes military reforms and lists Russia as the most prominent threat to the country’s security.

The Ukrainian strategy also outlines the conditions for successful European integration and accession to NATO.

Ukraine has been mired in an internal conflict since 2014, when Kiev launched a military operation against militias in the country’s southeast.

Moscow’s relations with Kiev deteriorated greatly amid the Ukrainian crisis, with Kiev accusing Russia of meddling in the conflict. Russia has repeatedly denied these allegations.
