At least nine people were arrested late on Monday during Ferguson protests, police say.

FERGUSON (Sputnik) – At least nine people were arrested late on Monday during protests in the US city of Ferguson, which followed the one-year anniversary of the police shooting of an unarmed black teen, a local law enforcement agency said.

The police also dismissed earlier media reports that a 12-year-old girl was arrested during the Ferguson protests.

"Woman arrested was not 12 yoa, but 18. She's 1 of at least 9 arrested in accordance w/State Charge 575.150: Resisting/interfering w/arrest," the St. Louis County Police Department said late Monday on its Twitter account.

The protesters threw rocks and frozen bottles of water at police, according to the department.

"We continue to support free speech, but agitators who ignore orders to disperse risk arrest," St. Louis police said in another tweet.

According to the local media, the tensions between the police and the protesters are not waning, with hundreds of demonstrators still present at the scene.

State of Emergency Declared Amidst Ferguson Protests
The rally commemorating Michael Brown, who was shot by white police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson a year ago, kicked off Sunday. Thousands of people gathered in the town’s streets to mark the event.

Brown’s commemoration in Ferguson was marred by violence, including the wounding of 18-year-old Tyrone Harris, who opened fire on police on Sunday night later to be shot and placed in critical condition.

Overnight, two unmarked police cars sustained damage from gunfire, two police officers were pepper sprayed by protesters and one was hit in the face by a rock, according to the St. Louis County police.

In 2014, the death of Michael Brown triggered riots in Ferguson and protests throughout the United States after a grand jury decided not to indict officer Wilson for shooting Brown.
