The incident dubbed "plebgate" by the British media occurred in 2012 when Tory lawmaker Andrew Mitchell had sworn at police officers and called them “plebs”. Soon after that, Mitchell met representatives of the Police Federation to clarify the situation. The video footage of the incident released in December 2012 cast doubt on officers' interpretation of the events.

Following the CCTV camera video revelation, the Scotland Yard had opened an investigation into police officers giving false evidence of the events.

In May, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) finished the investigation into the involvement of the police officers in the “plebgate”. According to the results of the investigation, the IPCC found violations of discipline in the actions of Detective Sergeant Stuart Hinton and Inspector Ken Mackaill.

Hilton and Mackaill could now be sacked if disciplinary charges against them are proved.
