US Dropped Bombs on Japan to Make Tokyo ‘Satellite Ally’ - Russian Official

The United States made Japan its "satellite-ally" by dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Sunday, mayor of Nagasaki, Tomihisa Taue, called on US President Barack Obama and heads of other nuclear-armed powers to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The satellite state designates a country that is formally independent, but is under certain political, economic or military influence from another country. It was primarily used to describe the geopolitical relations during WWII and its aftermath, when the world was divided into the confronting political blocs.

At the end of the Second World War, Japan was occupied by the Allied Powers, led by the United States. In 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on August 6 and 9 respectively. The bombing in Hiroshima killed about 140,000 residents of the city, and the raid on Nagasaki claimed the lives of some 70,000 people.

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in history.
