DAMASCUS (Sputnik) — A Syrian military delegation is discussing ways to counter terrorism in Syria with the Russian side during a visit to Moscow, sources in the Syrian capital told Sputnik on Wednesday.
According to the sources, the delegation, consisting of three high-ranking Syrian army officers, arrived in Moscow on Monday.
The agenda of the visit includes exchanges of experience in the fight against terrorism, the sources said.
On Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia had no plans to send its military personnel to fight Islamic State(IS) militants in Syria or to join the US-led coalition in conducting airstrikes against IS positions.
Syria has been in a state of a civil war since a 2011 anti-government uprising. The country's authorities are fighting militant groups, including Islamic State extremists. A US-led coalition had been conducting airstrikes against the extremists in the country since last September.
According to UN figures, more than 220,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict.
