NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – India is planning to construct a new complex where fuel for nuclear power plants will be produced, an official from the Department of Atomic Energy, Jitendra Singh, said Wesdnesday.
"The Government is planning to set up new nuclear fuel complex in the country," Singh said in a written response to one of the members of the country’s lower house of parliament.
According to the letter, the country’s Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) is establishing a facility to manufacture fuel assemblies required for the four pressurized heavy water reactors, located in Kakrapar (Gujarat) and Kota (Rajasthan), being constructed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).
Currently, there are 21 nuclear reactors in India. Eight of them use fuel the country produces itself, while the rest use imported uranium fuel from Russia, Uzbekistan, Canada and Kazakhstan.
