The government of Russia's Kaliningrad region announced that it is preparing a new bicycle path spanning nearly its entire coastline and part of a trans-European bicycle path network.

Russia's Kaliningrad region presented a new plan for a Baltic bicycle route along nearly its entire coastline, from the Curonian Spit to the city of Baltiysk in the region's south.

The bicycle path is intended as part of the region's preparations for hosting 2018 World Cup. The plan is separate from another bicycle path being built by the Curonian Spit National Park, which connects to the Lithuanian border.

"We prepared the project, and plan to present it before the cycle rally in early September," the region's acting governor Nikolai Tsukanov said.

The Lithuanian side of the Spit also has a bicycle path which connects by ferry to the Lithuanian port city of Klaipeda, and when the projects are completed, a trans-Baltic bicycle path could allow direct bicycle travel between Russia and Lithuania.

The entire 150-kilometer bicycle route is to be included in the European cycle route system, spanning the entire Baltic Sea coast.
