The Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office will once again demand from Interpol to put the country’s former president Mikheil Saakashvili on the wanted list.

Earlier, the Secretary General of Interpol refused to issue an international warrant for Saakashvili and withdrew a red notice warrant for former defense minister David Kezerashvili, the office confirmed.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said they are currently working on the documentation needed to put Saakashvili on Interpol’s wanted list.

Moreover, following a request by Georgia, a British court is now reviewing a request on Kezerashvili’s extradition. The Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office is in close contact with Britain and regularly provides all the documents and data needed for the extradition, the office said.

According to the office, Georgia asked Interpol to put Kezerashvili on its wanted list back in 2013, but the former minister filed a complaint to the Secretary General. When the complaint was examined Interpol requested the needed documents from Georgia. After the request was fulfilled Georgia’s stance on the issue was accepted and Kezerashvili was put on the wanted list. Then a French court demanded to stop the procedure, but Georgia insisted on its arguments, so Interpol accepted them and refused to abort the warrant.

Nevertheless, later Interpol made the final decision without taking into account Georgia’s arguments.

The Prosecutor General’s Office repeatedly conveyed complaints to the Interpol Secretary General’s documents and files on Saakashvili after the former president filed a complaint on Georgia’s request.

Saakashvili and Kezerashvili are named in a series of cases in Georgia launched after the 2012 parliamentary elections.
