“We managed to elaborate a comprehensive international legal mechanism to bring to justice those responsible for that crime,” Poroshenko said after his telephone linkup with Rutte on Friday.

The Ukrainian and Dutch leaders agreed to instruct their foreign ministers to coordinate their positions and draw up a joint action plan to set up an alternative international judicial body to investigate the July 17, 2014 downing of the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine.

Russia had earlier vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution that would have set up an international tribunal to prosecute those suspected of downing the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 with 298 passengers on board, two-thirds of them Dutch.

Moscow has repeatedly stressed that the resolution’s description of the tragic event as a threat to international security already hints at a biased investigation.
