UN Chief Admits Shameful Divisions and Failure Over Syria
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US State Secretary John Kerry on the issue of the Syrian conflict will be held in the Qatari capital, Doha, on August 3, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Thursday.

"The talks will be held on Monday," Bogdanov told RIA Novosti, adding that Saudi Arabian officials "could join the [Lavrov-Kerry] meeting."

Syria has been in the state of a civil war since a 2011 political collapse. Government forces have been fighting on multiple fronts against "a moderate opposition" and numerous extremist insurgent groups, including the Islamic State and Nusra Front.

Next Round of Consultations on Syria Could be Held in September

The next round of consultations on the Syrian conflict can take place in Moscow in September, with the participation of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and the representatives of Russia and the United States, Bogdanov said.

Moscow served as a host city for the two rounds of talks between Syrian leadership and the country's opposition in January and in April.

“It is possible that we can do it [next round of consultations] before the UN General Assembly, by the end of September”, Bogdanov told RIA Novosti.

“It is entirely possible that it would be “Moscow-3” [on the analogy with the two previous rounds of intra-Syrian talks], but with a broader participation maybe involving the representatives from Russia and the United States. Of course we support active involvement of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and his deputy in these contacts,” Bogdanov said.

He added that the new consultations could be held somewhere other than Moscow.
