The world’s population is expected to grow by 4 billion by the end of this century, UN reports.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The world’s population is expected to grow by 4 billion by the end of this century, reaching a whopping 11.2 billion, a new UN report released Wednesday shows.

The update to the UN’s world population estimates says a total of 7.3 billion people currently inhabit Earth. This number is predicted to reach 8.5 billion by 2030 and 9.7 by 2050.

India is expected to surpass China by 2022 to become the most populated country in the world. The population of Nigeria is predicted to become greater than that of the United States by about 2050, making it the world’s third most populated nation.

The proportion of the population above the age of 60 will rise from the current level of 12 percent to a quarter or more by 2050 in all major areas of the world, except Africa. In Europe, 24 percent of the population is already aged 60 or over and this figure is projected to rise to 34 percent in 2050 and 35 percent in 2100.
