Colorado jurors have ruled that a gunman who killed 12 people in at a movie theatre in Aurora in July 2012 is eligible for the death penalty having being found guilty of the murders, according to media reports.

At the time, Holmes was charged with 24 counts of first-degree murder, 140 counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of explosives.

Holmes defended himself by arguing he was insane and suffered from severe delusions and schizophrenia at the time of the shooting.

However, psychiatrists brought in by the prosecution argued against Holmes’ claims, revealing that he was sane when he conducted the killing.

Colorado investigators found a plot to the killing and precautions Holmes took in his diary.
