WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The act has been dubbed by its opponents as the Deny Americans the Right to Know Act (DARK). It would impose federal standards for the labeling of foods and beverages with or without ingredients made from GMOs.
“On passage Passed by recorded vote: 275 – 150,” final vote results for the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 read.
Earlier on Thursday, US Congressman Jim McGovern explained that the bill allows states to ignore consumer demands and invalidates state laws that require GMO labeling.
Two hundred thirty Republicans voted in support of the act, while 138 Democrats were against it, according to the voting record.
Now the bill heads to the US Senate for a vote.
Manufacturers in more than 60 countries are required to label foods containing GMO ingredients. In the United States, GMO labeling is not mandatory.
