The behavior of activist Sandra Bland, who was found hanged in a detention cell, did not indicate an intention to commit suicide, the Bland family attorney Cannon Lambert said in a press conference on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On July 10, 2015, Sandra Bland was pulled over by a Texas state trooper for failing to signal while driving. The trooper arrested the 28-year-old activist after allegedly she engaged in an altercation with him.

“We know for certain that when she went into that jail she was ecstatic,” Lambert said. “She was about to start a job and she had gone grocery shopping and filled her refrigerator.”

A video of the arrest by a passerby showed Bland being forced to lay on the ground on her stomack with her hands tied behind her back. Bland was detained after the arrest, but was found hanged in her detention cell three days later.

The authorities stated Bland committed suicide, but Bland’s family has demanded an investigation into her death.

Lambert noted that Bland had left messages with her loved ones prior to the encounter with the Texas state trooper, and did not show signs of distress.

The attorney said Bland showed behavior that “just does not jive with someone who would take her own life.”

Bland had reportedly suffered from depression and epilepsy, but Lambert explained she had never been clinically diagnosed or prescribed any medication.
