Earlier, the US State Department awarded Azimjan Askarov, who is ethnically Uzbek but a citizen of Kyrgyzstan, the 2014 Human Rights Defender Award. Askarov was given a life sentence for inciting ethnic hatred after he reported on alleged police violence during ethnic clashes between Kyrgyzs and Uzbeks in his country in 2010.
"We are disappointed by the [Kyrgyz] Government's withdrawal from the bilateral agreement, as we have long-standing, deep and mutually beneficial relations with Kyrgyzstan. The United States was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Kyrgyzstan, and has since provided assistance amounting to some two billion dollars… to support the democratic reforms in Kyrgyzstan,” the press service said.
Despite Kyrgyzstan revoking the 1993 treaty, the embassy said the United States is still ready to continue providing aid to Central Asian country.
The 1993 agreement dealt with cooperation on a wide range of issues, including military and technical aid, tax-free trade and joint counter-terrorism efforts.
