Senior al-Qaeda leader Muhsin al-Fadhli, who was a key member of the Islamist Khorasan Group operating in Syria, has been killed in an airstrike, US Department of Defense press operations chief Jeff Davis said in a statement on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The airstrike killed al-Fadhli while he was travelling in a vehicle near Sarmada, Syria on July 8, 2015, according to the statement.

“His [al-Fadhli’s] death will degrade and disrupt ongoing external operations of al-Qaeda against the United States and its allies and partners.”

In September 2014, media reported that al-Fadhli and his wife died during the bombardment of the Syrian city Idlib, but the information could not be confirmed.

Al-Fadhli was reportedly soliciting Iran's cooperation in al-Qaeda's attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001.

The Khorasan Group is a Sunni terror network of veteran al-Qaeda operatives that plots attacks on the United States and its allies, according to the US Department of Defense.

In September 2014, the Khorasan group pledged support for the so-called Islamic State caliph, Abubakr al-Baghdadi, according to media reports.
