On June 18, the local parliament accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici's government. Gaburici announced his resignation on June 12, after local media reported that he was lying about his education.

A week prior to the resignation, Gaburici appealed to the country's President Nicolae Timofti and Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu to give the government authority for full-fledged fight against corruption in state institutions. The prime minister threatened to resign if several high-ranking officials, including the attorney general and the head of the National Bank, were not dismissed.
