At least nine people were killed and eight injured on Tuesday when a minibus fell in a ravine in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, a local emergencies source told RIA Novosti.

GROZNY (Sputnik) — The minibus fell into a ravine from the height of 200 meters (some 656 feet,) the source said.

"According to the latest data, nine people have died in the accident, eight have been hospitalized, including two children."

Earlier in the day, it was reported that seven people died and six were injured during the crash.

Among the hospitalized people are three women, according to the source.

The rescue operation is currently underway, according to the Emergencies Ministry of Chechnya.

At least 11 emergency workers have been sent to the site, the ministry said.

Last week, the Chechen Interior Ministry reported an increase in road accidents in the region.
