Laura Browder, a 24-year old mother of two, was arrested on Wednesday by Houston police on charges of abandoning her children at a mall food court where she was meeting a prospective employer. She says her kids never left her line of sight.

Browder brought her 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son to the Memorial City Mall in Texas for a job interview because she wasn't able to line up child care. She sat her children down at a table in the food court and met her prospective employer nearby.

The 24-year-old college student said her kids never left her line of sight, but she was arrested by a police officer who was on the scene when she came back to her children.

Browder said she had been offered the position moments before her arrest.  She says she's unsure whether the charges will affect her opportunity with the employer.

Child Protective Services of Houston stated they are in the early stages of their investigation, adding that they could offer Browder assistance in finding suitable daycare.

In a statement, Browder called the incident "unfortunate."

"I had a interview with a very great company with lots of career growth," the statement reads. "I am a college student and mother of two. I would never put my name, background or children in harm's way intentionally. I have a promising future ahead of me regardless of what the media tries to portray me as."

"This too will pass and I am not concerned with outsiders have to say or what they think," Browder added.

Some on social media are claiming the police officer involved was motivated by racial prejudice, as Browder is African-American.
