MOSCOW (Sputnik) – German Vice Chancellor and Economics Minister Sigmar Gabriel became the first high-ranking European politician to visit Iran following a landmark nuclear deal with the Islamic republic, local media reported.

“This is the first high-ranking European delegation visiting Tehran in the wake of the nuclear agreement with P5+1,” the SHANA Petro Energy Information Network quoted Iran’s Oil Ministry official as saying Sunday.

Gabriel, president of the ruling Social Democratic Party, headed a 60-member economic and business delegation on a three-day visit at the invitation of Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh.

The outlet cited the ministry’s director general for Europe, the United States and the Caspian Sea, Hossein Esmaili, as saying the German delegation included representatives from 10 major companies specializing in high-tech and industrial equipment.

Esmaili added that the German delegation was due to meet with ministers of oil, foreign affairs, energy and industries, as well as members of the Iranian chamber of commerce and counterparts in the private sector.

Last Tuesday, the group of six major powers clinched a landmark deal with Iran curtailing its nuclear development program in exchange for gradual UN, US and EU sanctions relief.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was hammered out between the international negotiators more than 10 years after talks began, and nearly three weeks following the latest marathon talks in Vienna.
