Rosatom Offers Google, Facebook to Use Data Center in Russia

Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom offered internet companies Facebook and Google to use a data center in Russia in the Tver Region.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom has offered Internet giants Facebook and Google to use a data center in Russia in order to continue operations after a new data security law comes into force, the company's spokesman said in an interview published Friday.

The law, requiring internet companies to store Russian nationals' personal data exclusively within the country, comes into force on September 1.

Rosatom offered the internet companies a site near a nuclear power plant in the Tver Region, some 220 miles north of Moscow, as data centers are large consumers of electricity, Sergei Novikov said, as quoted by the Izvestiya newspaper.

"When situated next to an energy source — in this case, to the power units of the plant – the companies’ expenses reduce and they are guaranteed a source of energy," Novikov added.

Under the personal data law, a Russian citizen’s personal data may be processed in the territory of a different country in specific circumstances and under the supervision of the state regulator.
