Iran Deal May Pave Way for Kerry, Zarif Nobel Peace Prize - Think Tank

The detailed agreement reached Tuesday by Iran and six world powers is the most important multilateral nuclear deal in decades and can be compared with the 1996 Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), the Director of the Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Program at Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said.

VIENNA (Sputnik) — A final agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program could pave the way for awarding the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize to US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Director of the Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Program at Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) Tariq Rauf said Tuesday.

The detailed agreement reached Tuesday by Iran and six world powers is the most important multilateral nuclear deal in decades and can be compared with the 1996 Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), Rauf, who was the head of Verification and Security Policy at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 2002 to 2011, stated.

The comprehensive document ensuring the civilian nature of Iran’s nuclear activities would be beneficial for Iranians as it would bring sanctions relief, Rauf highlighted.

The breakthrough deal must be reviewed by the legislative bodies of the United States and Iran, Congress and Majlis respectively, prior to entering into force by the end of 2015 or early 2016.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be charged with monitoring and verification in case of ‘possible military dimensions’ within Tehran’s nuclear program, providing a report by year-end.

In turn, Iran will adhere to the IAEA protocol granting the organization expanded rights to inspect the nuclear facilities of the Islamic Republic.

According to diplomatic sources in Vienna, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano is to be appointed a side-beneficiary of Iran’s nuclear agreement.
