MADRID (Sputnik) — A member of the European Parliament from the Spanish European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) party, Marina Albiol, said that Merkel and other European leaders “used every effort to push Alexis Tsipras to resignation in revenge for the [July 5] referendum,” in which more than 61 percent of Greeks had refused to accept the creditors-proposed bailout plan.
Albiol said that after the Greek referendum, European leaders started to exert pressure on the Greek government and made it clear that no matter how many reform proposals Tsipras presented, it would not be enough.
“In reality, they were seeking his resignation, but they have failed, because, as the referendum has shown, people were on his side,” Albiol added.
According to the member of the European Parliament, Eurozone leaders are putting pressure on Greece to instill fear of leftist governments in Europe.
Greece owes $270 billion to its main creditors — the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and some Eurozone countries.
On Monday morning, following marathon talks, leaders of the Eurozone reached an agreement on a new bailout package for Greece. Greek Prime Minister Tsipras said that the idea of Grexit was now off the table.
