A New Arms Race? US Nuclear Test Might Trigger Response from Russia, China
MOSCOW (Sputnik), Alexander Mosesov — The test of a dummy nuclear bomb by the United States signifies that the country considers the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) non-binding, the head of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation told Sputnik on Sunday.

"In testing the B61-12 gravity bomb, the US sends the message to the world community that it is intent upon modernizing its nuclear arsenal, that an improved nuclear arsenal remains part of its military strategy, and that it believes it does not need to fulfill its obligations under Article VI the NPT,” David Krieger said.

The NPT entered into force in 1970. It is designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, at the same time promoting the use of civilian nuclear technology. The treaty established a system of safeguards that falls under the responsibility of the International Atomic Energy Agency. As many as 191 states have ratified the treaty.
