NEW YORK (Sputnik) — New York City fell short of its goal to raise enough money to facilitate a parade honoring the recent World Cup victory of the US women’s soccer team, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office said in a statement to Sputnik on Friday.

“The cost is $2 million in total, with $1.5 million coming from the city and $450,000 in private donations,” the statement read.

On Thursday, de Blasio said he was confident he would be able to receive at least $500,000 for the parade.

“I think in terms of private sponsorship, we feel good that what we need, which is about a half-million dollars, will be there,” de Blasio said during a press conference.

By the time the parade began, the city was $50,000 short, leaving New York City taxpayers to cover the amount.

“I think it’s going to be a great day for the city,” de Blasio added.

According to the New York Post, corporate sponsors included Major League Soccer, Nike, Mondelez foods and Electronic Arts.

On June 5, 2015, the United States defeated Japan to win its third Women’s World Cup in team history.

The match drew nearly 23 million television viewers, the best initial ratings ever for a US soccer broadcast on a single network, according to Fox.
