Syrian Troops Fighting Islamic State in Palmyra’s Western Suburbs - Reports

The Syrian troops are fighting the Islamic State jihadist group in the western suburbs of Palmyra, the Syrian national television reported on Thursday.

BEIRUT (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, the Syrian armed forces launched an offensive with the goal of liberating the ISIL-Occupied historic city, recapturing an area some 3.5 miles from Palmyra.

According to the channel, the army has taken control of a school in the area, where the ISIL had its local headquarters.

During the liberation of the school, several ISIL' military vehicles and 10 militants were killed, a military source told RIA Novosti.

Local media reported Thursday that the Syrian Air Force continued to carry out airstrikes on camps and checkpoints of the Islamic State in the area.

ISIL militants captured the ancient city of Palmyra in May, destroying some of its historic sites. The Syrian government evacuated the majority of the local population and removed the most valuable reliquiae from city museums to prevent their theft, sale or destruction.

Palmyra is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains large ruins of an ancient Roman city.
