The passage of the US-Jordan defense bill that will enhance cooperation between the two countries in fighting Islamic State terrorists shows Washington’s commitment to the Middle Eastern security, US Congressman and Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Ed Royce said in a statement.

WASHINGON (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, the US House of Representatives passed the US-Jordan Defense Cooperation Act of 2015. The bill aims at expediting defense equipment delivery to Amman for the next three years.

“By passing today’s legislation, [US] Congress sends a strong message of support to our critical partner in the Middle East,” Royce said in Tuesday’s statement.

Additionally, the legislation will help to address “strategic challenges,” particularly in the fight against ISIL. It also stressing that US policy should support Jordan in its response to the Syrian refugee crisis.

“Jordan sits on the frontlines of the fight against ISIS [Islamic State] and a refugee crisis in Syria where millions have been displaced. As a longtime key partner for peace and security in the region, it is important the US support Jordan as it confronts these security challenges.”

Meanwhile, US-led coalition forces have been launching airstrikes against the positions of Islamic State extremists in Syria since 2014. The coalition did not ask for, or receive, approval for its operations in Syrian territories from the United Nations or Damascus.
