NEW YORK (Sputnik) — A US flag-burning rally is scheduled to take place in a New York City park on Wednesday evening despite growing opposition to the event, advocacy group Disarm NYPD [New York Police Department] said in a statement.

“We will burn the American flag, a symbol of oppression and genocide, and in the same action, dismantle out stunted, cynical expectations of what is possible in the world,” Disarm NYPD said via Facebook on Tuesday.

The purpose of the rally is to raise awareness of the numerous churches in which African American worship that have been recently burned throughout the United States, according to Disarm NYPD.

“We find it a sign of the times that people can care so much about a piece of cloth, while at the same time be so quiet about black churches being burned all over the country,” Disarm NYPD said.

Six predominantly African American churches in five US states have been investigated for arson since June 22, according to Disarm NYPD.

The flag-burning event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. (12:30 a.m. GMT) at the Fort Greene Park in New York City’s borough of Brooklyn.

Disarm NYPD advocates for the complete disarming of the New York City Police Department due to its violent and oppressive behavior, according to the group’s website.
