Abducted Nigerian Schoolgirls Forced to Join Boko Haram, Carry Out Killings
17:41 GMT 29.06.2015 (Updated: 20:48 GMT 19.10.2022) The girls kidnapped by Boko Haram last year in the Nigerian town of Chibok have been forced to join the militant group, BBC reported Monday, citing witnesses.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the British broadcaster, the girls are being used to intimidate other people and carry out killings.
"They were Christian men. They [the Boko Haram fighters] forced the Christians to lie down. Then the girls cut their throats," a girl held captive by the militants told the BBC about the Chibok girls.
Boko Haram kidnapped 276 schoolgirls last April in the northeastern town of Chibok, triggering international outcry, demanding their release. After three days, 57 of the secondary school pupils managed to escape, but 219 remain missing to-date.
The Boko Haram extremist group began large-scale attacks in northeastern Nigeria in 2009, with the aim of establishing an Islamic state ruled by Sharia law. In February, the group expanded its attacks to neighboring Niger, Cameroon and Chad.
