The air attacks were a part of Operation Inherent Resolve, whose goal is to eliminate the Islamic State, according to the Joint Task Force.

The US-led Coalition of some 60 nations has been launching airstrikes against the Islamic State in territories under its control in Iraq since August 2014.

The coalition expanded the air attacks to Syria in September 2014, albeit without approval from the Syrian government.

The Islamic State is a militant jihadist group that has taken over large parts of Iraq and Syria and been making attempts to branch to other countries as well.

On Tuesday, the United Nations announced at least three million people in Iraq have been displaced by Islamic State fighting and violence.
