An overwhelming number of people around the world support a US military campaign against the Islamic State terrorists, according to a new poll released by Pew Research Center.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US-led Coalition of some 60 nations has carried out airstrikes against the Islamic State positions in Iraq since August 2014, and expanded the attacks to include targets in Syria in September 2014, albeit without the approval of the Syrian government.

“There is extensive global support for the US military campaign against ISIS [Islamic State],” the Pew Research Center said on Tuesday. “A median of 62 percent across the nations we polled say they support American military efforts against the militant group in Iraq and Syria, while a median group of 24 percent are opposed.”

Eighty percent of Americans surveyed said they also favored the US military campaign against the Islamic State militants, as do respondents in all European countries such as France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Most countries in the Americas including Venezuela, Argentina, Peru and Chile, as well as Russia and Ukraine, however, said they opposed US-led military action.

Majorities in most Middle Eastern countries strongly supported the US-backed campaign, most staunchly Israel, which approved it with 84 percent. Lebanon supported the military campaign with 78 percent and 77 percent in Jordan backed it.
