WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The hardware glitch has impacted the ability of US embassies and consulates to issue visas around the globe since June 9, 2015.
“Still working through the issue. They haven’t got it fixed yet. We do expect that hopefully sometime this week it will get resolved, but the team is still working at this 24/7.”
The spokesperson noted that US embassies are still trying to get some applicants processed, and some 1,250 visas for agricultural and temporary workers were issued last week to applicants whose biometric data had been captured before the system went down.
“They are trying to work some alternative solutions, but it is still a big problem and they are still working on it,” Kirby added.
More than 100 computer experts from both private and public sectors are working to address the hardware failure preventing the US State Department from processing mandatory security-related biometric data checks at embassies and consulates, Kirby said.
