Diego Maradona to Run for FIFA Presidency

Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona has decided to run for the FIFA presidency to replace Sepp Blatter, Uruguayan journalist and author Victor Hugo Morales said Monday.

"He told me he was going to run for president of FIFA and authorized me to inform the public," Morales posted in Spanish on his Twitter feed.

FIFA’s outgoing head Joseph Blatter announced plans to resign from his position at the football organization just days after being reappointed as its head on May 30 during the organization’s annual congress.

He is expected to step down by the end of the year, though earlier this week Blatter hinted he may reconsider.

The list of other great former players and celebrities who have announced their bids to run for the FIFA presidency includes Brazilian Zico, former FranceInternational David Ginola, FIFA Vice President, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, Liberia’s Football Association Chairman Musa Bility and President of the East Asian Football Federation, Chung Mong-gyu.
