RIGA (Sputnik) – New cases of African swine fever (ASF) have been registered in Latvia, the country’s State Food and Veterinary Service informs.

African swine fever affects domestic pigs, warthogs and wild pigs. There is no vaccine or treatment. The virus is very stable and can remain in produce for months.

The last time that African swine fever cases were registered in domestic pigs in Latvia was in September 2014. The virus also affected domestic pigs in other European countries including Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania.

As a precautionary measure, Russia banned the import of live pig, pork and other related products from the European Union in April 2014.

African Swine Fever does not affect humans.
