Greece should stay in the Eurozone by any means, as Grexit would undermine the very idea of the European unity, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Saturday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — At the congress of the German Social Democratic Party in Berlin, Frank-Walter Steinmeier said:

"We must make every effort to keep Greece in the Eurozone."

On many issues, Europe was "no longer taken seriously," that is why, the EU should establish a common stance on many issues, including Greece's debt crisis and the general idea of the European unity, the minister added.

Steinmeier also expressed hope that the next round of the EU-Greece negotiations would not fail.

On Thursday, senior EU officials formally discussed possible scenarios for Greece's debt crisis outcome, naming three of them. The prospects included extension of the existing bailout program, Greece's default and, as the least likely variant, a successful cash-for-reform deal.

Athens is currently in talks with the international creditors to unlock the final package of financial aid before the 2011 bailout program expires on June 30.

Earlier this week, one of Greece's three key lenders, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) left the talks, citing a lack of progress.

Greece's total debt is currently estimated at $350 billion, with some $270 billion owed to the three of its major creditors — the European Commission, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the IMF.
