A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip has triggered sirens in and around the south Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Security forces told the Jerusalem Post there were no initial reports of injury or damage, adding that the rocket may have failed to cross into Israel.

This is the third time a rocket has been launched from Gaza into the town of 118,000 in a little over a week, with previous attacks that did not leave any injuries taking place last Saturday and Wednesday.

The newly created so-called Omar Brigade radical Islamist group, espousing affiliation with the Islamic State, claimed responsibility for both rocket launches, according to local media.

The recent spate of attacks appear to be in breach of Israel's ceasefire with Gaza militant groups, including Islamic Jihad and Hamas. The truce came into effect after last summer's 50-day military campaign in the strip that had been carried out as a reaction to rocket fire from Palestinian territory.
