Moscow Accuses US, NATO of Violating Nuclear Non-ProliferationTreaty
20:38 GMT 11.06.2015 (Updated: 10:16 GMT 06.08.2022) The Russian Foreign Ministry accused the United States and its NATO allies on Thursday of violating the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) by conducting nuclear planning and missions.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The ministry stated that the only way to resolve the issue is to return all US nuclear weapons to the country, ban placing nuclear warheads abroad, destroy the technology facilitating nuclear weapon use and refuse to conduct nuclear exercises.
"The so-called joint nuclear missions practiced by the United States and their NATO allies are a serious violation of the said treaty [NPT]," the ministry said in a statement.
The NPT deal entered into force in 1970 to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons while promoting the use of civilian nuclear technology. As many as 191 states joined the treaty.
In April, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the United States breaching the NPT by placing its tactical nuclear weapons in Belgium, Italy, Turkey, Germany and the Netherlands.
