MOSCOW (Sputnik) — All members of the UK government have to support the campaign for the country to stay in the European Union if they want to retain their positions, Prime Minister David Cameron said.
"We have a clear view: renegotiate, get a deal that's in Britain's interest and then recommend Britain stays in it… If you want to be part of the government you have to take the view that we are engaged in an exercise of renegotiation to have a referendum and that will lead to a successful outcome," Cameron said at the G7 summit in Germany.
Cameron added that he was confident of his success in renegotiating Britain’s role in the 28-member bloc.
The Telegraph newspaper reported, citing sources, that Cameron would expect any minister supporting UK exit from the EU to resign.
Last week, the British government initiated legislation to hold a referendum on the UK's status within the European Union and will hold a second hearing on the legislature on June 9.
On Saturday, House of Commons member Steve Baker urged Cameron in a letter to negotiate better terms for UK’s membership in the European Union.
The Conservatives want a flexible relationship with Brussels that will allow London to decide on the amount of taxpayers’ contribution to EU coffers, business regulations, trade relations outside of the union, and migration curbs.
