Russia is sharing UN concerns over the recent escalation of hostilities in eastern Ukraine and calls for taking steps to stabilize the situation, Russia's envoy to UN Vitaly Churkin said Friday.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The United Nations Security Council held an extraordinary meeting initiated by Lithuania on Friday to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

"We share concerns about the resumption of combat activities in Donbass," Churkin said at an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Ukraine.

Churkin stressed that "measures must be taken to stabilize the situation."

Prior to Churkin's statement, Deputy Chief Monitor of OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) Alexander Hug said that recent clashes between Kiev and Donbass forces near the town of Marinka clearly show that that a military track has not been abandoned and called on all sides to urgently resume peace negotiations.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) should not simply report ceasefire violations in eastern Ukraine, but investigate the reasons behind the attacks and inform who the victims are, Vitaly Churkin said.

"We call on the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to not simply note ceasefire violations, but clearly write down the purpose of these attacks, and who suffers from them – civilians or military units carrying out artillery fire against settlements."
