WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — A US refrigerated logistics provider will pay a multi-million settlement for an airborne ammonia leak that made more than 150 people sick while responding to the 2010 British Petroleum (BP) oil spill in Gulf of Mexico, the US Justice Department said in a press release.

“[The Justice Department] announced a final settlement with Millard Refrigerated Services… for an airborne release of ammonia from Millard’s Theodore, Alabama, facility in 2010,” the release, issued on Tuesday, said. “Millard will pay a $3 million penalty for the violations that sickened 152 people responding to the BP oil spill.”

In April 2010, 4.9 million barrels of BP oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico affecting the natural habitat and major fishing and tourism industries.

Millard violated a number of US laws and Environmental Protection Agency regulations related to pollution liability and a community’s right to know about environmental accidents, according to the release.

In 2014, Lineage Logistics acquired Millard Refrigerated Services, according to a Lineage press release. The acquisition created the second largest refrigerated warehouse network globally, the release said.
