MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The 28th Russian humanitarian aid convoy arrived on Thursday in the cities of Donetsk and Lugansk in the crisis-hit eastern regions of Ukraine, the crisis management center for the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry announced.

"Emergencies Ministry’s vehicles [with humanitarian aid] arrived in Donetsk and Lugansk, and delivered food for the residents of the affected regions,… as well as building materials for restoration work and pharmaceutical products for medical facilities," a representative of the center told reporters.

The unloading of trucks has begun in the warehouses in the cities of Donetsk and Lugansk, he added.

The convoy includes more than 100 vehicles and carries over 1,000 metric tons of humanitarian aid to provide relief to people in the self-proclaimed republics of Lugansk and Donetsk.

Overall, Russia has delivered over 35,000 metric tons of aid to the people of Donbass since August 2014.

Donbass residents are experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe in the aftermath of the military operation launched by Kiev in April 2014. Ukrainian authorities began the operation to suppress local independence supporters who were unhappy with the country's coup.

The region has been also suffering from an economic blockade imposed by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in November, 2014, leading to the withdrawal of all state-funded health, educational and social support from Donbass.
