The Amtrak railroad service will install video cameras in train operator cabins to increase safety after its train derailed in Philadelphia killing eight people, Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman said in a statement on Tuesday.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The additional surveillance will supplement forward-facing cameras already in place on all Amtrak trains, Berman added.

The cameras will be installed by the end of 2015 on 70 trains operating between Washington, DC, New York and Boston as well as between New York, Philadelphia and Harrisburg.

“Inward-facing video cameras will help improve safety and serve as a valuable investigative tool,” Berman said. “We have tested these cameras and will begin installation as an additional measure to enhance safety.”

Amtrak plans to install cameras in operator cabins of all trains but has no exact timeline, Berman said.

The announcement comes as investigators continue to examine the May 12 derailment of a New York City bound train from Washington, DC that crashed in Philadelphia, killing eight and injuring around 200 others. The investigators determined that the train was traveling twice the speed limit before it derailed.
