According to Joint Secretary of Internal Security in the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs, M. Ganapathy, Islamic State recruit from the Mumbai suburb of Kalyan has confessed to plans to carry out attacks in India.

MOSCOW, May 22 (Sputnik) An Islamic State (ISIL) recruit from the Mumbai suburb of Kalyan has confessed to plans to carry out attacks in India, Joint Secretary of Internal Security in the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs, M. Ganapathy told Sputnik on Friday.

Earlier in the day, media reported that Islamic State planned to conduct terrorist attacks in India with the help of four recruits in the country.

"During the investigation Areeb Majeed, a youth from Kalyan near Mumbai has confessed about the designs of ISIS to carry out attacks in India. Four youths including Areeb from Kalyan who had gone to Iraq were indoctrinated, trained in use of various types of weapons by ISIS and they planned to carry out attacks in India," Ganapathy said.

According to Ganapathy, ISIL militants are in touch with various terrorist organizations to recruit Indian youths.

"Couple of weeks ago intelligence agencies had busted an ISIS linked module in Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh. So now we getting clear picture about the designs of ISIS," he claimed.

India's National Investigating Agency on Wednesday filed a charge-sheet on Areeb Majeed.

According to the document available on the agency's website, the four — Areeb Majeed, Fahad Sheikh, Aman Tandel and Shaheem Tanki — traveled to Syria and joined the Islamic State between January and November 2014.

Islamic State (ISIL), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), is a radical Sunni group that since 2014 has captured large areas in Iraq and Syria, proclaiming a caliphate on the lands that have fallen under its control. In recent months, ISIL, has been expanding its influence to other Middle Eastern and North African countries.

The group is notorious for its human rights atrocities, numerous brutal killings and human rights violations.

According to the US National Counterterrorism Center, over 20,000 foreigners from 90 countries are suspected of having joined the ISIL over the last three years.
