A third of Germans believe Chancellor Angela Merkel intentionally lied when she vowed to end US spying on Germany, in a bid to shield herself from criticism ahead of the 2013 general election, a poll has shown.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — An opinion poll, published by the Stern newspaper on Wednesday, revealed that 37 percent of respondents felt deceived by Merkel after she promised in her 2013 pre-election campaign to put an end to NSA snooping.

The survey was conducted between May 13 and 15 among 1,001 Germans across the country.

It also showed that the majority of Germans believed the whole spying affair to be quite or very important.
