Western sponsorship of the so-called color revolutions has made the public skeptical about the state of media freedom in the West, a Hungarian parliamentarian told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova – The "color revolutions" were a series of regime changes caused by popular protests in several post-Soviet republics, including the Rose Revolution in Georgia in 2003, the Orange Revolution in Ukraine in 2004 and a more violent Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan in 2005.

Marton Gyongyosi, vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian National Assembly, said:

"More than two decades of sponsoring colored revolutions and coups of all sorts in the region, interfering in the sovereignty of nation states, instigating or outright forcing 'integration' and 'adoption' of Western models from Central-Eastern Europe to the Middle East make people skeptical about Western values and media freedom."

According to Gyongyosi, it is not surprising that people from the West seek alternative media sources and opinions.

Earlier this week, an ICM Research survey conducted exclusively for Sputnik found that 60 percent of European and US citizens polled said they would be interested in receiving information on global events from alternative news outlets.
