The members of the UN Security Council have condemned the Tuesday terrorist attack on the Russian Embassy in Syria's capital, Damascus.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The members of the UN Security Council have strongly condemned the Tuesday terrorist attack on the Russian Embassy in Syria's capital, Damascus, stressing the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Lithuania's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the Security Council's President for May, Raimonda Murmokaite, reminded on Tuesday of "the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and the obligation of host governments including under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, to take all appropriate steps to protect diplomatic and consular premises against any intrusion or damage."

Murmokaite stressed that "serious material damage" was inflicted on the property of the Russian Embassy in Damascus, which came under mortar fire on Tuesday. No one was injured in the attack.

According to the President of the UN Security Council, its members are calling for measures "to prevent any disturbance of the peace of these missions or impairment of their dignity and to prevent any attack on diplomatic premises, agents or and consular officers."

Earlier on Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack on the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Damascus, calling it a terrorist act.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the international community to give due assessment to this act of terror and urged an immediate cessations of such actions, as well as armed violence in the crisis-hit country in general.

Syria has been in the state of civil war since 2011. The country's government is battling against several insurgent groups, such as ISIL and the al-Nusra Front (Jabhat al-Nusra).
